The Boys and Girls Club of Ellettsville proudly hosted the Ellettsville Police and Fire Departments during their "Heroes" themed week at their Summer Program. Chief Deputy Humphrey of the Police Department gave a presentation about being a Police Officer and public and personal safety, followed by a special showing of the Police cruiser. Fireman Matt from the Fire Department brought the blue fire truck and presented information about fire safety and life as a fireman. He then showed all the different aspects of the fire truck and uniforms. As he left he was cheered away by the kids at the Club, while giving an example of the sirens.
"Creating connections like these within the community of Ellettsville is what it's all about. These children are our community's investment. The kids really enjoyed meeting their local 'heroes' and I know they felt even more a part of this community through this experience", says Amy Matney, unit director. The Club thanks these gentlemen for their involvement and for providing fun and interesting activities for the kids.
A Day In The Life of YCCMC by Amy Matney taken from the speech delivered at the "Please Join Us..." event May 12th 2009
"Yesterday 55 children walked through our doors. 55 children munched on pretzels, drank chocolate milk, and chatted with friends and adult mentors about their day. 55 Children attended Monday Meeting .a time in which they learn about responsibility, teamwork, and the opportunities that await them for the week.
Yesterday, 55 children were productive, responsible, and engaged in meaningful activities from 3-6pm. Working on homework, designing a mural idea for the art room wall, playing pool, participating in Math Hangman, learning about nutrition in Go Girl Go with Girls Inc.....these are just some of the opportunities that were available yesterday... more"

A collaboration of student organizations from Indiana University volunteered at the Youth and Community Center of Monroe County (YCCMC). Students from American Humanics, the Journey Fellowship, Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE), and Camp Kesem worked together to help prep our space at Eagles Landing, Indiana for the future home of an after school youth center. The students came in two shifts from 9am until 12pm or from 12pm until 3pm. A few dedicated students and staff from Journey and YCCMC spent all day in Ellettsville, Indiana cleaning, prepping, and painting. Overall about 17 volunteers took part in the experience and it was a great kickoff for all the work that lays ahead for other volunteer crews. YCCMC wants to thank all volunteers who took part and truly appreciates all their work.
