Learn how to distribute information about Brown, Green, Lawrence , Martin, Monroe , Morgan, Orange and Owen Counties on the internet for free. On the internet there is a free encyclopedia that is fairly well known called Wikipedia . Not as well known but still well respected by Google are regional wikis that cover issues specific to a geographic area.

Topics like what is on a restaurants menu, community service activities, stores in the area, recreational activities, church schedules and annual festivals. The regional wiki is much more than a directory it includes a description of the topic whether it be a community service organization, shop or some local history as well as the contact information. The regional wiki is not a form of advertising it exists to inform people about what a place has to offer, who lives there, and its history.

Entering the information is as simple as using a word processor. Once submitted there are volunteers that will help with the formatting as time allows. It is important to note a wiki is a communal effort. One person may write an article on one of the State Parks, someone else might add more detail and three other people may supply photos or sketches of the park. There is so much to tell about our small piece of the world that one person cannot do it all. A wiki is a tool that allows us to combine our efforts to create a much more complete picture then one person could alone.

Like a travel guide the regional wiki will cover many aspects of an area without going into great depth. The wiki gives order to information about an area giving users directions as to where to find out more. Though not complete, a wiki is a good way to get an initial web presence and if you already have a website it is a great way to compliment your current website by driving more traffic to it.

There will be a meeting Saturday from 9:00 to 10:00 am on March 22, 2008 at Eagles Landing on Hwy 46 Ellettsville, IN room 217 to explain what should go on and how to use www.bloomingpedia.org.
